Installing a gas fireplace is a great way to add decor, warmth and value to your home. They can be installed with minimum remodelling and just about anywhere with a simple cut in the exterior wall for the venting. Just like a furnace, fireplaces are rated in AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency), so the higher the rating the more energy efficient the fireplace will be.

At the Phoenix Mechanical we offer two types of fireplace systems; direct vent and inserts.

Direct vent systems give you a wider range of versatility. They are vented through the side of an outside wall so there is no need to construct or use a chimney that runs above the roofline. Most of these models are available in sealed combustion configuration. This means that the air used to generate the flame (combustion air) is drawn in from outside. At the same time the flue gas fumes are vented outside as well. This is by far the most efficient style of fireplace since it creates no cold drafts and there is no heat loss. These systems can operate at an efficiency of up to 90 percent.

Gas fireplaces offer users a quick and easy operation at the flick of a switch. Some models give you remote control capacity when you are sitting down and others turn on and off as the temperature rises and falls in the room. Something to consider is that some manufactures offer electricity free ignition systems. More than just a selling feature, this can offer you heat during power outages.

This type of fireplace can be installed where an old wood burning one used to be. They are vented with a special liner that runs from the fireplace to the top of the existing chimney or flue to exhaust the fumes. They are composed of an inner and outer box that surrounds the fireplace. When turned on, the air between the boxes warms up and circulates through the space and then into the room. In some models, the heating process is helped by using a built in fan.
