 Ductless Split air conditioning systems consist of two main items, an evaporator and condenser coil. The evaporator coil is the part that is installed into a room and the condenser coil is the part you typically see installed outside of your home.
The difference between this system and central air systems is that there is no required ductwork to install or operate the systems. The evaporator unit is combined with a fan and is usually mounted on a wall. This gives the owner the flexibility of installing it in a room(s) where there is no ductwork present or they require extra cooling capacity in certain locations.
Many clients who have radiant hot water heating systems choose this option as they do not have a ductwork system in there homes. It is also possible to have a multiple zone system that can cool different spaces at once or independently.
